A Brief Company History

The business was established in 1912 as a hairdresser in the Brisbane Arcade by Mr Charles.A.Schweida. Family members followed in the trade until the Second World War, when his son Leo Schweida, with his wife Elva (a dancer) continued the business name as a wigmaker and theatrical supplier in the Brisbane Arcade.

After 50 Years at this address and expanding the business into fancy dress, ballet and dance wear, the shops were sold and the 'Schweidas', contemplating semi-retirement, commenced a small "hobby" business at Annerley.

The "hobby" grew rapidly and after a fire demolished the premises in 1988, the Schweida's relocated nearby to start rebuilding the business.

Sweida's now import extensively and have the largest range of theatrical supplies and costume accessories in Queensland, if not Australia.  Leo Schweida passed away in 1998, after a short illness.  The success of this Queensland family owned and operated business, now lies in the hands of the third & future generations.  Christine Schweida, daughter of the Schweida's was managing a Ballet Shop at the Gold Coast for ten years.

Chris, now married with two children, has taken on the task of continuing the name of Sweida's.  Together with her husband, Jeff, they have introduced new methods of operation and fresh ideas into the business.  Needing more space - they moved to Salisbury in 1996 and again moved in 2004 to even larger premises, next door.  Sweida's name in the business community is greatly respected, one of the last surviving fully Queensland owned and operated business for over 94 years.

This is mainly due to our loyal customers who have supported us over the years and continue to do so.
